What is a Shared Ownership Valuation?

A shared ownership valuation assesses the market value of your property, which is then used to calculate the cost of buying additional shares (known as ‘staircasing‘) or to determine your equity when selling. Unlike a standard property valuation, shared ownership valuations must meet specific requirements set by housing associations and lenders.

How Staircasing Works

Staircasing allows you to gradually increase your ownership stake in your property. When you decide to buy more shares, a valuation determines the current market value, and you’ll pay a percentage of that value based on the additional shares you’re purchasing. 

Over time, you can increase your ownership up to 100%, at which point you’ll own the property outright and no longer pay rent to the housing association.
