Insightful presentation by Emma Bear on the difference between copy and content and how to improve sales copy writing.
Wow! What a great presentation given by Emma Beard at Altspace in Altrincham.
When trying to market a product or service in this world of social media, TikTok, influencers and everything in between it is easy to get lost in what you’re trying to achieve and how best to say it.
I don’t mind admitting I never knew the difference between copy and content.
As described by Emma:
- Copy – can be adverts, landing pages, websites etc. that are trying to get you to do something. In marketing talk content will include a call to action (CTA) to leave your details or buy something.
- Content – Content can be in the form of a blog, on social media or a website that gives information about a product, service or person but without the intent to immediately sell something. It is often used to build trust around a brand or person that helps lead generation.
Emma also gave a couple of great suggestions that can immediately improve your sales copy:
- Swap me, me, me to you, you, you – check your sales copy and I guarantee it will be stuffed full of text about how great you are as a company. I’m sure its probably all justified, but try rewriting it with the customer at the heart of it. People are more interested in themselves than you!
- Keep it Simple – Get rid of all the jargon and industry talk from your sales copy. Treat the reader as a 9 year old – provide the information so it is simple to understand. Using technical jargon will create a barrier to your customer and they won’t think you’re any cleverer!
